Happy Birthday, Roger Ebert!

If someone decides to make a list of the most influential film reviewers, there’s no way that Roger Ebert, of the Chicago Sun-Times, wouldn’t be near the top.  When I was growing up, he and Gene Siskel were the only reviewers that I knew of who’s reviews actually could be called entertaining in and of themselves.

Quite Possibly The Most Bizarre Video Ever. Really. No Kidding.

When you think of Woolite, the detergent for fine washables, you normally don’t think of Rob Zombie, director of the remakes of Halloween 1 & 2, The Devil’s Rejects, and The House of 1000 Corpses, as well as the lead singer White Zombie.

But some twisted marketing genius has somehow decided to bring to the two together.

‘Green Lantern’ Review

This review of “Green Lantern” contains a videoclip that could be considered as a spoiler.  If you want to go into the film with as little knowledge as possible, please do not watch.

Anyone that says or implies that “Green Lantern” is worst film of the summer–so far–isn’t being entirely honest.  To be the best at something–even if your ‘best’ is your ‘worse’–takes effort.

Not anyone could make a “Plan 9 From Outer Space.”

And while that film is probably not on too many people’s must-see lists, you have to admit that it’s remarkable that something so awful was ever made in the first place.

Blinded By ‘Green Lantern’s’ Light

Some reviewers, such as Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers, seem to think that “Green Lantern” is the “Heaven’s Gate” of superhero films.  Rottentomatoes.com seems to agree, which is probably why it currently has a 25% approval rating.

That being said when I checked Rottentomatoes yesterday it had a %20, so perhaps there’s room for improvement in that area.

As I mentioned in my prior post, what appears to be turning off many critics–other than the dodgy CGI–is the writing.  That’s a fatal blow for a movie of this nature because the character is already somewhat silly, and weak writing is only going to make that only more obvious.

I am going to catch it this afternoon, and post a review tomorrow.

‘Green Lantern’s’ Waterloo?

I hope Deadpool does well for Ryan Reynolds, because it looks like Green Lantern may not be the breakout hit Warner Brothers expect it to be.

Why do I say this?

Darren Aronofsky’s Ark Of Folly?

Oh. My. God (pardon the pun).  Darren Aronofsky has recently made a quite profitable film–”Black Swan”–and for some reason feels the need to ruin his one-film profitability streak by making a movie about Noah’s Ark.

The last myth-based film, 2010′s “Clash of the Titans” was profitable, but despite being a mediocre film, at least had The Kraken.

‘The Walking Dead,’ Season 2

I know that “The Walking Dead” is a television show, not a movie, but for the longest time the only place where fans of the undead could get such gory treats was on the big screen, so I am glad to celebrate the transition to the small screen.  For fans of zombie-filled goodness, the second season of The Walking Dead has begun filming in the Atlanta, Georgia area.  I don’t know about the rest of you but I am so psyched for the new series that I am thinking about watching the first all over again.

‘FullMetal Alchemist’

Lately I have been expanding my anime repertoire.  A few days ago I watched some episodes of “Samurai Champloo,” which has to be the best synthesis of anime/hip-hop attitude/Japanese history that I have yet seen, assuming that there is other anime in done a similar vein, which I doubt (though “Cowboy Bebop” came close in terms of visual style and general sophisication).

Though “FullMetal Alchemist”  is a bit of an anomaly in that it is perhaps one of the most (sporadically) violent anime that I have seen, and when I write “violent” I mean in a thematic sense primarily, though there is violent imagery.

Tron 3 Ramping Up?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, David DiGillio is writing the sequel to Tron: Legacy.  The original writers, Edward Kitsis (mistakenly called Adam Kitsis in the article) and Adam Horowitz, are busy with a project for the ABC television network and are currently unavailable.

As I mentioned in a prior post, despite its marketing costs, Tron: Legacy has pulled in around $400 million dollars worldwide, which was the highest gross for a first time filmmaker (Joseph Kosinski) ever.
