I ask this out of genuine curiosity (tinged only with a little bit of snark) because many of DeCoteaus’ films, such as “Hercules Unbound!” “1313: Bermuda Triangle,” “1313: Wicked Stepmother,” 1313: Cougar Cult,” “1313: UFO Invasion,” “1313: Cougar Cult,” among others all have a bunch of half-dressed, seeming asexual guys at the center of the action.
I write ‘asexual’ because despite wandering around shirtless, or in underwear of various types, they don’t seem to engage in any sort of sexual activity–male or female–that I have seen.
I also admit to seeing one of his films, though for most the formula appears to be the same. In fact, despite having different casts (though, oddly enough some appear to take place in exactly the same local from one film to the next) and titles.
This is particularly the case with the ’1313′ series of films mentioned above.
As things stand, I am not quite sure what the purpose of his films are. They appear to be geared at a homosexual audience, but I can’t see them as being titillating, though I also can’t see women being to drawn to them, if only because once you get over the attractiveness of many of the actors, they don’t act all that well.
And the oddest thing is that David DeCoteau is a pretty storied film maker, which makes me wonder why it many of his films are so bland (if DeCoteau’s intent is to make queer cinema, he needs to take a look at just about anything by Gregg Araki–though “Mysterious Skin,” being particularly brilliant, would be a good place to start).
The trailer below isn’t for “1313: UFO Invasion,” but I think you’ll get the drift.
