The trailer for Guillermo Del Toro’s “Pacific Rim” has finally arrived, and it’s too cool for school. It reminds me a bit of Michael Bay’s ‘Transformers’ films, except that it doesn’t suck, you care about the characters–which I can even tell from the trailer, amazingly enough–and has some awesome robots.
I like two things in particular: First, it explains where all the monsters that plague the world come from. For the most part, Godzilla and his buddies are remnants from prehistoric times, altered by radiation in some cases, or aliens from Planet X, or some such place (which I assume is located in the Alphabet Universe, somewhere in proximity to Planet Y and Z).
In “Pacific Rim” the monsters all come from another dimension, which explains why there aren’t fossils or anything of that sort.
The next interesting point is about the robot suits themselves, which reminds me in a cool way of Stuart Gordon’s “Robot Jox.” They literally suspend the pilot in mid-air, so that the can punch, run, and fight in a logical and very visually cool fashion.
Hopefully this makes a gazillion dollars, if only because Bay’s films earned as much, and they barely tried, so this should hand’s down do better.
I’ll upload the trailer as soon as it’s available (Damn you, WordPress!).
