More ‘Oldboy’ News!

According to Aintitcoolnews.com, Josh Brolin is being sought for a lead role in Spike Lee’s take on Chan wook-Park’s “Oldboy.”  It’s seems like a good choice, because onscreen he can appear somewhat volatile, which is perhaps not too different from real life if the bar fight during the filming of Oliver Stone’s “W” is any indicator.

Directors To Look Out For: Richard Jobson

Richard Jobson, director/writer of 2008’s “New Town Killers,” is someone to watch for in the future.  The way he composes shots, in a kinetic, rapid-moving fashion, in New Town Killers, reminds me somewhat of Danny Boyle.  It’s similar thematically to “The Most Dangerous Game”–which I haven’t seen, and “Surviving The Game”–which I have.

Conan Vs. Final Cut Pro X

When I have posted video from Conan O’ Brien, it usually had something to do with him skewering movies (such as his “Thor” parodies), though I was surprised to learn that he’s aimed his sights at Apple. And speaking of Final Cut Pro X, here’s video of someone actually using the program.

No Surprise, Transformers Destroyed The Competition

It’s no surprise to anyone that “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” dominated the weekend box office, though how overwhelming it was may have been.  It pulled in $210 million overseas, and $162 million domestically, for a total of $372 million dollars. Now keep in mind that the film cost almost $200 million to produce, and […]

Will ‘Green Lantern’ Be Eclipsed By ‘Transformers’ & ‘Captain America?’

As I wrote last week, Green Lantern’s greatest problem is that its foreign box office returns are weak, which is confirmed in a story at ComicBookmovie.com.  The article, among other things, tells of a precipitous box office fall-off the film has recently experienced.  According to Boxofficemojo, “Green Lantern” has currently earned $76 million dollars, domestically,  […]

‘Bad Teacher’ Trailer

You have to be careful with movies like “Bad Teacher” because the line between funny and bad taste is a very difficult one to straddle without turning off the causal viewer.  If it doesn’t have  at least a little bit of ‘heart,’ if it can’t manage to make you care at least a little bit […]

Mystery Film From Pixar

According to Comingsoon.net, there’s an original film–as in not a sequel to anything–coming from Pixar in 2013.  This is a mystery because it’s commonly known that they are releasing “Cars 2,” “Brave” and “Monsters University” the sequel to 2001’s hit “Monsters.” So what is this new film?  It can’t be “John Carter.” which, despite the […]

‘Green Lantern’s’ Box Office Light Dims

I wrote in a prior post that I didn’t expect “Green Lantern” to pull in any more than $40 million dollars in its Friday-Monday debut.  I underestimated its box office by almost $13 million dollars.  It’s better than my estimate, though still weak in comparison to other superhero films like “Thor” or “X-Men: First Class.” Another […]

Happy Birthday, Roger Ebert!

If someone decides to make a list of the most influential film reviewers, there’s no way that Roger Ebert, of the Chicago Sun-Times, wouldn’t be near the top.  When I was growing up, he and Gene Siskel were the only reviewers that I knew of who’s reviews actually could be called entertaining in and of […]
