‘John Carter,’ Mea Culpa (Of Sorts)

For awhile now, I have been been carping on how ‘John Carter’ is due to be a box office dud.  After all, it earned just over $30 million last weekend, getting it’s arse handed to it by a Lorax.   Now, here’s the reason for a reluctant mea culpa:  Foreign box office receipts, which did […]

‘The Lorax’ Pulls Big Money At The Box Office

When I first saw the trailer for “The Lorax,” during “Ghost Rider: Sprit of Vengeance,” a few days later I mentioned to a co-worker that I would not see the film because whenever I heard the character speak, I saw Danny DeVito, who voiced the character. Dr. Seuss’s creation appears to have made the transition […]

‘The Bourne Legacy’ Trailer

With Matt Damon not returning to the Bourne movies, there was no way that Universal was going to give up on a franchise that has pulled in almost $950 million dollars.  Enter Jeremy Renner, last seen in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and (soon) in “The Avengers.” I hope that Paul Greengrass (“The Bourne Supremacy,” “The […]

Harrison Ford Returns to ‘Blade Runner’

Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner,” based upon the Phillip K. Dick short, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” appears to be spawning a sequel that may have Harrison Ford in a starring role. According to Vulture, the film is estimated to be coming our way sometime in 2014 .  That Scott was revisiting the world of […]

Super Bowl XLVI Movie Trailers

With companies–literally–spending millions of dollars for a 30-second spot during the Super Bowl, some may wonder what they’re spending the money on. That answer is: viewers. Despite huge costs to advertise during the game, Super Bowl XLV in 2011 brought in 111 million viewers. That’s a huge amount of eyes glued to the screen, which […]

What Is It About Greg Berlanti?

“Green Lantern,” a film that should have been the first salvo of DC Comics assault on the box office, and Marvel Studios, has almost reached the $220 million mark worldwide. That’s a lot of money, though when your production budget is $200 million, we aren’t necessarily talking about sequel material, despite what Warner Bros. says (by the […]

My Secret Twilight Shame

I admit that when I first heard about the general disdain thrown the way of the ‘Twilight’ films, I joined right in despite never having seen any of them. In my defense, can you blame me?  Sparkly vampires?  Reproducing (as in sexually) vampires?  I DON’T THINK SO.  I grew up on films like “Fright Night,” […]

Van Helsing 2

I heard a while ago that there would be a sequel to 2004’s Van Helsing, the Hugh Jackman film that (somehow) managed to earn around $300 million dollars worldwide, though I assumed that Universal came to their senses and moved on, since it seemed lost in development hell. Silly me. Sure, it managed to mangle […]

Immortals Live Large At The Box Office

Tarsem Singh’s “Immortals” has gone on to earn $68 million ($32 million domestic and $36 million foreign).  Based on a budget of $75 million I would not be surprised if the film pulls in somewhere in the neighborhood of $80 million, domestic box office.
