I am not sure how I feel about the second trailer for Gore Verbinski’s “The Lone Ranger.” I dig the trippy visuals in the opening, though the height of the platform (how did Johnny Depp get him up there any way, with a crane?) looks like it was done just to put our hero (Arnie Hammer) in an awkward situation. Then there’s the discomfort of listening to Depp talk as ’Tonto.’
He sounds, I don’t know, vaguely offensive, like a white person imitating an American Indian (which he is).
I guess the closest approximation I can find to describe the way I feel would be people–be they black, white or other–dressed as American Indians during Washington Redskins games.
Sure, you can do it, but it comes off just a bit tacky.
I also like the attempts at humor, but a little bit goes a long way, under the circumstances. That being said, I can’t believe that I am getting used to the silly crow he’s wearing on his head. For that reason alone, I think I want to see the film.
