The teaser trailer for Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is pretty amazing, primarily because it doesn’t appear that the upcoming movie will ignore the death of Chadwick Boseman – who played T’Challa/Black Panther – who died of colon cancer in 2020.
Though another thing of interest is that the movie serves as the introduction of Namor the Sub-Mariner, a character that plays a similar role to Aquaman in the comics (and while Namor came first – and is much cooler besides – Aquaman appeared in the live-action space in 2018) who also hails from Atlantis.
So, how do you introduce Namor without him appearing to be an also-ran?
Apparently you make him come from another place entirely.
If you’ve seen the trailer, you might have noticed that Namor looks very Aztec or Mayan-adjacent. That’s no accident. According to The Direct, Namor will hail from Talocan, linking him directly to the Aztecs.
It’s an interesting decision, if only because the Aztecs are as far as I’m aware are a sun-centered people, so while I don’t quite get how they make the transition to the ocean, it’s at least interesting and perhaps more importantly, different from Aquaman.
