I just watched the trailer for “The Hunger Games,” and it looks OK, but not quite distinctive enough for me to pay to see. Lionsgate has a lot riding on this film, and looking at the trailer I am not sure that it’s money well-spent. The movie–and hopefully the sequels–are based upon a series of […]
The original “21 Jump Street” was a television series about a team of cops that appeared younger than their years, which was a good thing, since their ‘beat’ was high school. The cast was an ensemble, though the most famous alumnus of the series would have to be Johnny Depp. The movie version of the […]
I heard a while ago that there would be a sequel to 2004’s Van Helsing, the Hugh Jackman film that (somehow) managed to earn around $300 million dollars worldwide, though I assumed that Universal came to their senses and moved on, since it seemed lost in development hell. Silly me. Sure, it managed to mangle […]
Before I begin, let me establish a few things: The ‘Frank’ in question is Frank Darabont, someone who I not only have never met, but whom has no idea that I exist (nor should he, unless he has an unquenchable desire to learn about IT from the perspective of someone who works in a Washington, […]
Tarsem Singh’s “Immortals” has gone on to earn $68 million ($32 million domestic and $36 million foreign). Based on a budget of $75 million I would not be surprised if the film pulls in somewhere in the neighborhood of $80 million, domestic box office.
I recall former Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders saying, in reference to abortion, that “We must stop our love affair with the fetus.” I feel the same way about horror films (as well as abortion, but that’s another matter) because too many of them treat children as if they’re weak, and far more fragile than they […]
Whenever I write, “I really like whatever, but…” you can be assured that I am going to dispense a little tough love. This time is no different because I just learned that Jenji Kohan’s “Weeds,” the Showtime series about the Botwin family and their adventures, which generally revolve around either selling or consuming marihuana, has […]
Tarsem Singh, director of “The Cell,” and “The Fall,” is now tackling the world of Greek gods with “Immortals,” territory explored in films like “Clash Of The Titans,” and to a lesser extent, “300.” The clip below is a particularly violent one, but his stylized direction makes the violence in some instances beautiful, almost balletic, […]
Let’s be clear: While I don’t know Brett Ratner, he does tend to come off as a bit of a douche. That being said, does that mean that he should have stepped down from producing them because he said “Rehearsal is for fags” in a interview? Is it tacky? Sure, without a doubt. Does talking […]
Last Saturday I was part of the filming of “The Dark Knight Rises,” code named “Magnus Rex,” in New York. I played one of 600 Gotham City policemen who had just escaped from being trapped in Gotham’s subway system by Bane. No pictures were allowed, though I recall enough of the 13 hours I worked […]
