‘Green Lantern’s’ Waterloo?

I hope Deadpool does well for Ryan Reynolds, because it looks like Green Lantern may not be the breakout hit Warner Brothers expect it to be.

Why do I say this?

First, its got a 20% on Rottentomatoes.com. That in and of itself doesn’t mean much, but when various sources report that the film reportedly costs $300 million dollars, it’s not a good sign.

Also, accordoing to the same article, it’s expected to pull in $50 million its opening weekend, though I think that that is a bit optimistic.

From the trailers that I have seen, it looks a bit childlish and, if that’s not bad enough, cartoonish.  In all honesty, I must admit that I have never been a bit fan of DC, though Green Lantern was always one of my favorite characters.  That being said he’s a remarkably difficult character to render in real life because his antics are sometimes very over the top (especially when he makes various things out of green light, yet the intent is generally serious).

By the way, if it pulls in more than $40 million Friday-Monday I’ll be surprised.

“Green Lantern” premiers this Friday.

    1. Warner’s has spent–from what I hear–something like $150 million dollars hyping this film, so I think they’re taking a carpet-bombing approach to getting the word out there. It’s a pity because Ryan Reynolds is a really engaging actor (especially when he tones down the snark) and deserves better.

What I am really curious about though is why some other studio left “Green Lantern” all alone. The buzz surrounding this movie is so bad that I think that it would have been easy to counter-program against it.

  1. I watched it and I didn’t like it… but there were lots of kids in my theater so I wonder if at least the kids found it to be interesting…

    1. I plan to see it either today or tomorrow, though to be honest part of me wants to see if it’s as bad as many critics seem to think that it is. I like to think for myself, but at the same time, can they all be wrong?
