“Squeeze” is the third episode of the First season of the X-Files, and introduced arguably one of the most iconic characters in the series’ history, Eugene Tooms (Doug Hutchinson). Tooms is a genetic mutant, and has the ability to contort his body, enabling him to fit into spaces and openings an ordinary human couldn’t.
Another peculiar result of his condition is that he is very long-lived, and does not seem to age physically.
This being the X-Files, we can’t have someone with such fantastic abilities without paying a price. In this case, Tooms comes out every 30 years and consumes five human livers, then goes into hibernation. This means that Mulder and Scully only have a small window of time before he vanishes for another three decades.
And it goes without saying that no one believes them.
In fact, it’s worth mentioning that what makes this episode so effective is not the social effects, or the story – which is a bit outlandish – but Hutchinson himself, who has an odd, otherworldly look about him.
