The teaser for Marvel Studios’ Black Widow dropped early this morning, and it’s glorious though what I mentioned in my video is worth repeating, namely Black Widow will likely avoid what I like to call ‘The Charlie’s Angels Misstep.’
By which I mean you make an action film designed with a laser-like focus to appeal to a particular group, not known to attend those types of films in massive numbers.
And there’s also the element of forced nostalgia, but the former is not a small thing.
Speaking of Black Widow, she exists firmly in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) which means that there’re literally millions of people who will see her on the strength of that alone.
But it’s also worth mentioning that the Widow is obviously female but despite that she isn’t either objectified (as she has been to various extents, sometimes deliberately so, in prior Marvel Studios appearances though that was typically done to empathize her nature as a femme fatale and of questionable allegiance or to sway opponents into underestimating her).
And did I mention that you catch a few glimpses of Taskmaster in the trailer!?
And while he doesn’t appear to wear the trademark mask, opting for a helmet, which let’s be honest makes a lot more sense, he has enough visual cues that it’s unmistakeable who he is.
