I’ve gotta admit that I didn’t see this coming.

James Gunn and Peter Safran – Gunn handling the creative end, while Safran takes care of the business side of things – isn’t something that I expected to see.

Now comes the question: Which James Gunn will DC Studios, formerly DC Films, get?

Will it be the James Gunn that directed the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, which managed to couple Gunn’s rather unique sensibilities within a studio context, or will it be the James Gunn that directed Super, a somewhat nasty little movie about a delusional superhero?

Or will it be the James Gunn who directed 2012’s Suicide Squad, a movie that was well-received among the fan community, but failed at the box office?

I’m willing to wager David Zaslav is preying for the first because by my reckoning Gunn is a fascinating director as long as he’s kept within certain bounds though at the helm of the entire DC Universe?

Who knows?
