‘The Collection’ Review

The Collection

“The Collection” isn’t the worse film that you’ll ever see, though it’s probably one of the most pointless.”

(I was made aware that my original review contained some inaccuracies – like the title of the film, for instance – so I have made corrections.  Thanks, Jamie.  The film is called “The Collection,” not “The Collector,” which is its sequel.  The movie remains pointless, though I wonder if seeing the first film would clarify matters somewhat)

Marcus Dunstan’s “The Collection” – currently streaming on Netflix – isn’t a terrible film, though it is a pointless one (which in its way is worse).  There are some that would call it “torture porn,” though I wouldn’t go quite that far because most of the violence is so over the top, so bizarre that it makes no sense.

For instance three characters attend a rave, where – for no apparent reason – the Collector has set up an odd lawnmower-like contraption on the ceiling, designed to act just like a lawnmower; but replacing the lawn with people.

It was an interesting way to kill someone, but to what point?

The film is filled with needlessly elaborate traps, which are barely necessary, since the Collector is able to somehow defeat trained – and well-armed – mercenaries for the most part, without them.

If this were a Friday The 13th-type film, I could understand it because Jason had become something beyond human many films ago, but this Collector?  As far as I am aware, he’s just a man with a penchant for needlessly complex traps.

Which is a pity, because if the movie were in a Death Wish-type of vein, it would have been pretty interesting, and wouldn’t have needed nearly as much gore.

And been a much better film for it.

What I think Dunstan missed was that, when people die in movies that you don’t care about, they can do so by the hundreds – and beyond the spectacle of death itself – it doesn’t matter.  Though what’s interesting is that when we were introduced to a few characters we could bond with in a small way, they’re killed off in perhaps the dumbest – and laziest – way possible.

And the worse thing of all is that there are some pretty decent actors in “The Collection,” like William Prael, Lee Tergeson (of “Oz,” “The Forgottten,” “Shaft” and many others) and Andre Royo (“The Wire”)

  1. The movie you ate referring to is The Collection, not The Collector. The Collector is the sequel to The Collection. As far as I can find The Collector is not available for streaming.
