Russell Davies created Queer As Folk (starring Aidan Gillan, Craig Kelly and a very young Charlie Hunnam) that ran from 1999-2000.
Later, in 2005 he was an executive producer/writer on Doctor Who.
Interestingly, if watch the first episode of the original Queer As Folk, there’s a scene where Vince Tyler (Craig Kelly) is watching Doctor Who.
Now, here’s where things get interesting. Was Davies aware he’d be writing and executive producing Doctor Who just five years later?
And you could ask what else would Vince have been watching? And I’d say: Space: 1999, Thunderbirds, UFO, Blake’s 7, Joe 90, The Tomorrow People, Sapphire & Steel, Terrahawks, etc.
So, there were plenty of British science fiction that Davies could have chosen, yet he ended up on Doctor Who.
Now, it’s not impossible that he was aware that he’d be taking the helm of Britain’s premiere sci-fi franchise five years before the fact.
It’s possible, but more than a little bit unlikely, which makes it a very strange coincidence.
