No, that isn’t a typo.
According to Walter Hill, the director of the 1979 epic – that may sound hyperbolic but I indeed consider The Warriors to be an epic – he planned to have a gay gang, the Dingos, in the movie.
According to the report in The Hollywood Reporter, they actually made it to the final cut, but were one of apparently a few elements excised due to studio-mandated budget cuts though what’s interesting is that I’ve always thought that the Turnbull A.C.’s came off somewhat gay (in fact, I thought the Warriors themselves read as gay, which had more to do with a bunch of dudes walking around wearing no shirts and in matching leather vests more than anything else) which shouldn’t be a surprise when most of your movie has a lot of muscular dudes running around chasing each other without a woman to be found.
Which isn’t to say that there weren’t women in the movie – beyond the DJ who’s entire purpose was to inform the other gangs what the Warriors were up to and the ‘working woman’ who Swann (Michael Beck) essentially dragged around with him, that is – because there were the Lizzies, which it’s worth mentioning had a few lesbians members.
Now that I think about it, maybe it’s not a bad thing that there was no clearly gay gang in the Warriors because I always thought that they were there all along.
