I reviewed the first episode of Disney+’s Moon Knight – The Goldfish Problem – last week and was perhaps a bit uncharitable because the Moon Knight depicted in the series was a later interpretation of the character, and not the one I grew up reading.
The earliest incarnation of the character had none of the multiple personalities – though Marc Spector, Jake Lockley and Steven Grant were still present though they weren’t the result of trauma and a mental disorder more than an effort to get information from various places while remaining incognito.
For instance Jake Lockley was a cab driver who used his job to get information, while Steven Grant was a millionaire and used his money to finance Moon Knight’s various devices and Marc Spector was a mercenary, who’s exploits provided the seed capital to build Grant’s fortune.
What is really interesting is that, in a way, Disney+ takes the character back to his origins in that it’s very much based in the supernatural (and let’s not forget that the character first appeared in Werewolf by Night).
That being said, Steven Grant in the comics wasn’t British, and I don’t quite see why he is in the miniseries and while the character works within that context, he’s also fairly irritating till one gets used to him.
