The second series of Netflix’s Squid Game is really good though I wonder if the upcoming third, and final, season can maintain momentum and wrap in a satisfying fashion; which if you’ve seen The Prisoner (1967-1968) – a series Squid Game is likely inspired by, along with Battle Royale (2000) – is harder to do than one might think.
And it’s worth reiterating that The Prisoner lasted a single year, which is the opposite of what I like to call ‘Supernatural problem,’ an idea inspired by the series Supernatural (2005-2020) when it ran on the CW for 15 years, about ten years longer than it should have.
And while I watched a lot of those later seasons, I was getting embarrassed for the cast because as time passed the logic behind each season got weaker and weaker till I felt that putting the series out of its misery was a kindness.
And to quote Bruce Cockburn from Mighty Trucks of Midnight:
I believe it’s a sin to try and make things last forever
Everything that exists in time runs out of time some day
Got to let go of the things that keep you tethered
Take your place with grace and then be on your way
That being said, while a three-season run is relatively short if it rushes the finish it might undermine everything that came before.
