More Dr. Strange Rumors

Now take this with a HUGE mound of salt, but according to ComicBookMovie.comShockya.com, and numerous other sites, Tom Welling, who just completed playing Superman in Smallville, is being courted by Marvel Studios.

Various writers then make a leap that would do the Hulk proud, and assume that the character that Marvel expects him to play is Dr. Strange, based upon–I assume–it happening to be in development (along with DeathlokRunaways and numerous other projects.  Speaking of which, I would be safer saying that he would play Henry Pym in Edgar Wright’s Ant Man).

If they are attempting to make a movie remotely faithful to the character, such a move would be worse than the casting of Keanu Reeves in “Constantine.”

And that’s saying a lot. Woah.

I am not sure why it’s assumed that Tom Welling would be headlining what would be (at least) a $120 million dollar production.  His last two films, “Cheaper By The Dozen 2” and a remake of John Carpenter’s “The Fog” give no indication that he could carry a major studio tentpole.

The most convincing point against the casting of Welling as Marvel’s resident Master of the Mystic Arts is that he’s too young and lacks the gravitas to carry out the role.  The actor who plays Dr. Strange should be older, and with greater presence.

Someone like Ioan Griffudd (who played Mr. Fantastic in the “Fantastic Four” and its sequel) would be a better choice, since he actually resembles Dr. Strange and has the presence to carry subject matter that would perhaps look silly coming from someone else.
