Whether or not Gavin Hood’s “Ender’s Game” succeeds or not, I think that, as a director, he gets a bad rap. Sure, he directed the execrable “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” – though he also had a hand in the surprisingly entertaining series “Breakout Kings,” currently on Netfilx, as well as the Academy Award winning film “Tsotsi” – and it can be argued that he should have been more familiar with the characters.
But, it’s important to remember that Hood did not write the film. As a result, he can be blamed for the way the film looks, and the nature of the special effects, but not for what comes out of characters’ mouths, or how they’re interpreted on screen.
I haven’t read the books by Orson Scott Card that are the basis of the film, though the trailer looks interesting enough that I will probably catch it.
