Take Waititi’s Jo Jo Rabbit feels like something that you’d expect from A24 instead of Fox Searchlight after being acquired by The Walt Disney Company–especially considering that it revolves around a little boy who sees Hitler (Taiki Waititi) when things get difficult.

While the trailer doesn’t necessarily make Hitler seem sympathetic it apparently makes some of the people that enabled him appear at least human.

And I’m okay with that because they were.

Most depictions of Hitler too quickly forget that he didn’t do what he did alone, and that there were people involved who were just apparatchiks–people doing a job, and while that doesn’t excuse what they ended up contributing to it doesn’t mean that they were any more than cogs in a machine, one hand not quite sure what the other was doing.
