I enjoyed John Logan’s Penny Dreadful, which ran on Showtime from 2014-2016, which is why I’m confused by the trailer for Penny Dreadful: City Of Angels.
As far as I can tell it not only has nothing at all to do with the terrain covered by the original series, but none of the actors makes an appearance either.
And sure, there’s some evil but that we’re talking about a supernaturally-orientated series that’s a bit of a given, which makes me wonder what’s the point!?
Why not call this ‘City Of Angels’ sans the ‘Penny Dreadful’ part because it seems so different thematically that it appears to be its own animal entirely.
And Penny Dreadful took place in London, while City Of Angels taks place a continent away in the United States.
And while Josh Hartnett was the lone American in the first series, if I recall his character didn’t hail from Los Angeles, but Texas.
It just doesn’t makes sense. I don’t say it’s bad but I don’t get the connection between the first series at all.
