Many view “The Chronicles of Riddick,” as a failure, which it very well be, depending upon your metrics. If you’re looking exclusively at box office receipts, then it was, seeing that it brought in $59 million domestically and $58 million internationally, for a total of $115 million.
That’s a decent take, though when you consider that the film had a production budget of $105 million dollars, then you throw in marketing costs, you probably will end up with a film that underwhelms financially.
Then again, perhaps I am wrong, because it appears that Vin Diesel is talking about a sequel, and every once in awhile he releases production art for the upcoming film.
Talk is cheap, and easy to do, as Warner Bros. illustrates when they talk about a sequel to “Green Lantern,” which has so far earned $219 million dollars (the problem being that it cost $200 million to produce)
This is why when David Twohy, the director of the first two films, says that the sequel is coming, I am a believer.
The original “Pitch Black,” made on a $39 million dollar budget, earned over $53 million dollars was a bit of R rated mayhem that launched the career of Diesel. The third film appears to be following a similar formula in that it will be lowered budgeted than ‘Chronicles,’ smaller in scale, as well as the aforementioned R rating, as opposed to the PG-13 of ‘Chronicles.’
