Super Bowl XLVI Movie Trailers

With companies–literally–spending millions of dollars for a 30-second spot during the Super Bowl, some may wonder what they’re spending the money on.

That answer is: viewers.

Despite huge costs to advertise during the game, Super Bowl XLV in 2011 brought in 111 million viewers.

That’s a huge amount of eyes glued to the screen, which is why movie studios, car makers, and companies that can afford the expense choose to air commercials during the event.

This year, the movie studios were represented by The Walt Disney Company, who are behind “The Avengers,” and “John Carter,” Lionsgate, which is producing “The Hunger Games” and Universal, which is backing “Battleship.”

“The Avengers” trailer, manages to get away with showing enough to have the average fan salivating, while actually revealing very little of what’s actually going on.  It’s essentially the teaser, with a few more character shots.

Disney’s “John Carter,” is believed to be budgeted at somewhere around $250 million.  That’s a lot of money for a film that, except for people aware of the books by Edgar Rice Burroughs, will have no idea what they’re seeing on the screen, or who the heck John Carter is.

It may be just me, but when your trailer opens with a quote from Jay-Z, and that happens to be the grittiest thing about it, something tells me that the movie is in trouble.

Watching the trailer for “Battleship,” it looks awfully similar to a Transformers movie, which is perhaps not a coincidence, since the producers of that film are also working on it.  And while “Transformers:  Dark of the Moon” made tons of money at the box office, it’s an open question if viewers are willing to see a movie that has the look of that film, though minus Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, and the rest of the crew.
