Pete’s Dragon was a Disney movie made in 1977 that–like other Disney movies at the time–was a mixture of live action and hand-drawn animation.
Think of it as the CGI of its time.
What about the new version? Looking at the trailer, I Initially thought that I was revisiting The Jungle Book, which also revolves around a wild-child.
Then I thought I was looking at Lost, with its damn irritating invisible Tyrannosaur (though to be fair invisibility was a feature shared with the dragon from the original movie).
Tonally speaking, the reboot feels more serious–which is inevitably the case when you have Robert Redford in your movie.
Here’s hoping he’s not falling in the footsteps of another famous Robert, who’s been in some really bad movies as of late.
