I REALLY like this trailer!
It revolves around a couple who’re immigrating from Sudan and despite the fact that it appears that they’ve escaped from a really violent situation in their former home country they encounter horrors of a supernatural variety that they could never have anticipated.
The immigrant experience is ripe for the horror treatment and that of the African diaspora is richer than most though it’s been for the most part neglected though imagine moving from everything you know to a place where not only no one knows you, but you’re treated with varying levels of contempt by the people already there?
I suspect it’s terrifying long before the addition of the supernatural. That being said, it’s a subgenre that for the most part has been neglected though there’re a few examples that I can recall off the top of my head.
There’s the fifteenth episode of the second season of The X-Files, Fresh Bones (it’s not great, but it’s watchable), The Believers (1987) – which is really good – and that’s it?
There must be more, but I can’t recall any others off the top of my head though the movie is also reminiscent of other great movies, like The Changeling.
And His House looks like it could be a great addition to a subgenre of horror that’s as I said, has been long neglected.
It’s on Netflix.
