James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water recently reached $1.17 billion at the worldwide box office, which is not a bad thing for Searchlight Pictures, the studio that released the film.
Though that’s not the most interesting part of the article from The Hollywood Reporter.
What is is that when James Cameron said that his movie needed somewhere in the ballpark of $2 billion to break even, the writer of the article somehow feels the need to add “sources say the breakeven number is around $1.4 billion.”
Now keep in mind, James Cameron wrote, produced and directed this movie so it goes without saying that relatively few people are familiar with the ins and outs of the production than he is.
And besides, why would he say it costs more to break even than it supposedly does?
Wouldn’t it be easier for him to just agree with those unnamed sources or maybe, just maybe being so involved with the production gives what he says added veracity?
And besides, there have been numerous articles about the new technologies introduced in his movie, and as everyone likely knows, new technology is expensive.
