How Did Fiefield Get Lost?

Ridley Scott has one of the most distinctive eyes – figuratively speaking – in movies in that if you see one of his films and can pick up on his particular visual tendencies/quirks, you’ll recognize anything else he does.

And Prometheus (2012) is no different because it’s a beautiful movie that looks much more expensive that it’s $130 million budget would perhaps indicate.

Visually, he’s just remarkable though what’s often a weak point for the auteur is the story and Prometheus is no different.

I happened to catch it recently on Netflix – I have seen it two or three times prior – and really enjoyed the scene when Fiefeld (Sean Harris) used his ‘pups’ to map the alien structure though something occurred to me based on that scene that went unnoticed the past times I watched the movie.

Namely, how did Fiefeld got lost?

Now keep in mind while his automatons had not explored the entire structure, they had explored enough to get him out, yet somehow he entered an area of the structure that had yet to be mapped?

And the story could have easily made allowances for this – make Fiefield more inquisitive and have him acknowledge that he was going off grid or something to that effect.

Instead it took the opposite tact, making his desire to leave almost seem irrational and bordering on unhinged, which only reinforced the idea that he wouldn’t just wonder off but that he would leave as quickly as his legs would carry him.

As most people know who’re into this movie, Damon Lindelof came in and essentially rewrote Jon Spaiths’ screenplay so can that just be a sub-plot that was lost in translation or is it just sloppy writing on someone’s part?
