‘Stinger’ In A ‘Teacup’

When I first heard that James Wan was developing a series based on Robert McCammon’s excellent novel,Stinger, I had mixed feelings.

The novel revolves around an alien (the language of the creature isn’t directly translatable to any human language so the closest we can get to what the creature is is ‘Stinger of the House of Fists’) that crash lands on Earth in pursuit of another different alien and the havoc that ensues when Stinger runs amok in its efforts to capture the other creature.

The story is less John Carpenter’s The Thing and more like Critters, except if there were a single bounty hunter in pursuit of a single alien.

While it’s a great novel and more people need to be aware of it, I’m not sure James Wan is an ideal way of that happening because I’ve seen more than a few movies that he’s either directed or produced and they’re typically not terribly challenging.

In any case, what was going to be a movie in 2022-2023 has now morphed to a series on Peacock likely coming out in 2024 called Teacup (a terrible title, certainly not better than Stinger, the title of McCammon’s novel).

This could be interesting because, as I said, it’s a great novel and I’m hoping that Wan’s contribution is fairly minimal (beyond being an executive producer, which is a term that’s virtually meaningless without further context).
