While I think that the best genre is produced in the United States, there are some pretty strong contenders.

Such as the French.

Directors like Alexandre Aja, Xavier Gans, Dominique Rochere, Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, etc are really doing some really interesting work in that they take ideas you’ve seen before, such as serial killer or zombies, and tweak it in really interesting ways that it looks somehow innovative.

And speaking of Maury and Bustillo, they’re back with The Soul Eater, their first movie since The Deep House three years earlier.

It looks really interesting and revolves around a mythical being that’s perhaps more real than fantasy when a series of murders are connected to it.

What works for me is that this movie can go either way in that the entity could indeed be real and we’re talking about a fight against the supernatural or it could be a person treating it as real for purposes yet unknown.

Either way, it looks to be really interesting.
