I have a sneaking suspicion that Robert Eggers’ upcoming Nosferatu is going to not do all that well at the box office.
And there are a few reasons why I think that that going to be the case – take a look at the video for more – one worth thinking about is why it’s being released being Christmas.
And let’s be clear, the movie looks (based upon the trailer) like a particularly dour period piece, so why would executives at Focus Features think that Christmas would be a good time for it?
A point I make in the video is that it’s comparable to Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) in a lot of ways beyond the story (F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu is essentially a knock-off version Bram Stoker’s original story).
There’s an optimism at the heart of Francis Ford Coppola’s movie, something I’m not sure is in Eggers.
And let’s be clear, it doesn’t have to be more optimistic but I don’t think too many people seek out more things to not feel good about it, especially during the holiday season.
