Review – Us

I enjoyed Get Out, the introduction of Jordan Peele as a director. While it was a confident debut, it was also somewhat derivative.

Us is another matter entirely. It possesses the same confidence of Peele’s debut, but moves with an elan bordering on bravado because let’s be clear, Us is more complex and that it doesn’t somehow manage to stumble over it’s own feet as it engages in a complex dance of that weaves between comedy, pathos and terror is something of a minor miracle.

And the story is fantastical to the point of nonsensical, which is why you need actors that can get across the bewilderment, the bizarreness of the situation. Lupita Nyong’o, is pretty remarkable and the performances in general so good that you accept what’s happening, no matter how strange.
